The internationally important dunes at Kenfig are set to be given a timely boost as part of a major conservation project’s work to help revitalise sand dunes across Wales.
The Sands of LIFE project, led by Natural Resources Wales (NRW), will soon start work to scrape areas within the dune slacks at Kenfig Nature Reserve in Bridgend. This work will remove the existing fast-growing vegetation and create bare sand habitat that is crucial to the survival of some of Wales’ rarest dune specialist wildlife.
The project team will also remove scrub, such as birch and willow, species which if not controlled will effectively thrive in wet areas and spread further through the dunes and overgrow important dune slack and grassland habitats.
Over the last 80 years, open sand has largely disappeared from Welsh sand dunes, being replaced by dense grass and scrub. This change has been caused by factors such as the introduction of non-native plants, lower levels of grazing, climate change and air pollution. As the dunes have become more stable and overgrown, rare wildlife has declined.
The project has worked closely with colleagues at NRW and the Kenfig Corporation Trust to plan all work thoroughly.

“Kenfig is an internationally important dune site and we have an ambitious program of works planned to help recreate precious habitats which are home to some of our rarest wildlife.
“We look forward to getting these works completed over the coming months. We will then monitor our work to see how the rejuvenated habitats develop over time, hopefully enabling specialised dune species to thrive and ensuring Kenfig’s sand dunes remain a wildlife haven for years to come.”

“The work of the Trust centres on those actions that will protect, improve, preserve and promote the wellbeing of the Nature Reserve. We have been delighted to be part of this project and already see that the work of the Sands of LIFE project will have a demonstrable effect on the wellbeing of this internationally precious site.”
Overall, Sands of LIFE is restoring over 2,400 hectares of sand dunes, across four Special Areas of Conservation, on 10 separate Welsh sites. The project runs until December 2022.
Separate Sands of LIFE winter work will also be taking place at eight other sites around Wales to further boost this special habitat.

Gwaith hanfodol Twyni Byw i gefnogi twyni Cynffig
Bydd y twyni sydd o bwys rhyngwladol yng Nghynffig yn cael hwb amserol fel rhan o waith prosiect cadwraeth pwysig i helpu i adfywio twyni tywod ledled Cymru.
Cyn bo hir, bydd prosiect Twyni Byw, dan arweiniad Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (CNC), yn dechrau gwaith i grafu ardaloedd o fewn llaciau’r twyni yng Ngwarchodfa Natur Cynffig ym Mhen-y-bont ar Ogwr. Bydd y gwaith hwn yn cael gwared ar y llystyfiant presennol sy’n tyfu’n gyflym, gan greu cynefin tywod noeth sy’n hanfodol i oroesiad rhai o’r rhywogaethau arbenigol prinnaf yn nhwyni Cymru.
Bydd tîm y prosiect hefyd yn cael gwared ar brysgwydd, fel bedw a helyg, rhywogaethau a fydd, os na chânt eu rheoli, yn ffynnu mewn ardaloedd gwlyb ac yn ymledu ymhellach drwy’r twyni a chynefinoedd pwysig llaciau’r twyni a’r glaswelltir.
Dros yr 80 mlynedd diwethaf, mae tywod agored wedi diflannu i raddau helaeth o dwyni Cymru, ac yn ei le ceir glaswellt a phrysgwydd trwchus. Achoswyd y newid hwn gan ffactorau fel cyflwyno planhigion estron, lefelau is o bori, newid yn yr hinsawdd a llygredd aer. Wrth i’r twyni ddod yn fwy sefydlog a dechrau gordyfu, mae bywyd gwyllt prin wedi dirywio.
Mae’r prosiect wedi gweithio’n agos gyda chydweithwyr yn CNC ac Ymddiriedolaeth Corfforaeth Cynffig i gynllunio’r holl waith yn drylwyr.
Dywedodd Laura Bowen, Swyddog Prosiect a Monitro De Twyni Byw:
“Mae Cynffig yn safle twyni tywod sydd o bwys rhyngwladol ac mae gennym raglen uchelgeisiol o waith wedi’i chynllunio i helpu i ail-greu cynefinoedd gwerthfawr sy’n gartref i rai o’n rhywogaethau prinnaf.
“Edrychwn ymlaen at gwblhau’r gwaith hwn dros y misoedd nesaf. Byddwn wedyn yn monitro ein gwaith i weld sut mae’r cynefinoedd sydd wedi’u hadfywio’n datblygu dros amser, gan alluogi rhywogaethau arbenigol y twyni i ffynnu a sicrhau bod twyni tywod Cynffig yn parhau i fod yn hafan i fywyd gwyllt am flynyddoedd i ddod.”
Dywedodd Brian Davies, ar ran Ymddiriedolaeth Corfforaeth Cynffig:
“Mae gwaith yr Ymddiriedolaeth yn canolbwyntio ar y camau hynny a fydd yn diogelu, gwella, cynnal a hyrwyddo lles y Warchodfa Natur. Rydym wedi bod yn falch iawn o fod yn rhan o’r prosiect hwn ac rydym eisoes yn gweld y bydd gwaith prosiect Twyni Byw yn cael effaith amlwg ar les y safle hwn sy’n werthfawr yn rhyngwladol.”
Mae Twyni Byw yn adfer dros 2,400 hectar o dwyni tywod, ar draws pedair Ardal Cadwraeth Arbennig, ar 10 safle gwahanol yng Nghymru. Mae’r prosiect yn rhedeg tan fis Rhagfyr 2022.
Bydd rhagor o waith gaeaf y prosiect Twyni Byw hefyd yn cael ei wneud ar wyth safle arall ledled Cymru er mwyn roi hwb pellach i’r cynefin arbennig hwn.
